Best small ski resorts in Switzerland

Switzerland’s catalog is full of 10–40 km hills that never appear on “best of” lists written for overseas weeks. They are the product Skiboard was built for: a Saturday from the city, a readable mountain, a cheaper ticket. Small does not mean toy — Elm and Melchsee-Frutt still drop you into real alpine terrain.

When small is the right size

If you ski 12 days a season, a 25 km area you can learn by lunch beats 400 km you will never map. Lift queues are shorter. Parking is saner. The trade-off is snow-hold on warm March afternoons — pick height or a north face.

Braunwald was on this list until its operator stopped the four ski lifts for good from winter 2026/27; the gondola still runs for sledging and ski touring (SRF, 26 August 2026).

Are small Swiss ski resorts cheaper?
Usually, yes. For Sat 16 Jan 2027, the median adult day pass read on the operators’ own shops and tariffs on 24 Oct 2026 was CHF 34 at areas under 20 km of pistes and CHF 69 at larger ones; the ski pass prices guide lists every area. Each area’s page shows its price for the weekend once it is on sale. Smaller areas also tend to have shorter queues.
