How to get to the Swiss ski areas by train
The timetable reaches 266 of the 304 ski areas in Skiboard’s catalog from at least one of 12 stations, by the fastest connection leaving between 06:30 and 09:30 on Sat 16 Jan 2027 for the bottom station of one of each area’s lowest lifts, the walk from the last stop included, read on 30 Oct 2026. From Zürich HB, 44 areas are within an hour and a half; from Geneva, 5. These steps turn that read into a ski day; the table says what each station reaches.
Step by step
Start from the timetable, not the map
Distance says little: Pizol is nearer Zürich than Engelberg is to Lucerne, and takes longer. Skiboard read the public timetable for every area from 12 stations (the ten cities and the two airports) and shows the time on the ranking, the city pages and each resort page, labelled “timetable”, with the stop and the number of changes. 38 areas have no connection from any station in the morning window, mostly tiny lifts and areas entered from France; they keep a labelled estimate.
Count the changes, not only the minutes
A ski day by train usually ends with a bus or a mountain railway, and a missed connection in the valley costs the first hour on the slopes. Direct connections to a lift under two and a half hours are rare: Chur (12), St. Gallen (9) and Lucerne (6) have the most, while Lausanne and Geneva have none. From Zürich, the fastest larger area is Flumserberg (1h 00, 1 change). The table lists each station’s direct areas; the resort page gives the stop the ride ends at.
Aim for the bottom station, not the village
Every time here ends at the bottom station of one of the area’s lowest lifts, with the walk from the last stop counted, not at the village’s railway station: “Wangs, Pizolbahn” rather than Sargans, “Engelberg, Titlisbahnen” rather than Engelberg. Type that stop into the SBB app and the trip you buy is the one the time describes. Where an area has several valley stations, Skiboard took the one the timetable reaches fastest, which is not always the main one.
Leave with the early trains
The times are the fastest connection leaving between 06:30 and 09:30, which puts you at the lift for the first cabins. From Zürich that is 8 areas within an hour and 44 within an hour and a half; from Lausanne 16 within an hour and a half, and from Geneva 5: the Romandie’s areas are a Lausanne day, and Geneva’s fastest larger area is Villars (1h 48, 1 change). Later trains are often slower, with a worse change in the valley.
Buy Snow’n’Rail where it exists, the pass online elsewhere
For 40 areas SBB sells the train and the day pass together as Snow’n’Rail, on sbb.ch or in the app, loaded onto your SwissPass, often with a discount on the pass; the Snow’n’Rail guide lists the offers and says when the operator’s own shop is cheaper. Everywhere else, buy the day pass in the operator’s shop onto a keycard or your SwissPass (the guide to buying online says how) and the train ticket separately. With a GA only the pass is paid; with the Half Fare travelcard the Snow’n’Rail fare drops too.
Check the day’s own trip before you go
One Saturday stands for the winter: the timetable runs the same trains every Saturday from the December change (13 December this winter), and until then the autumn timetable still applies. Works, a bus that runs only in season, or a mountain railway closed for wind can change the day you travel, so open the trip on sbb.ch the evening before; the SBB button on each resort page opens the same stop. The time is the fastest of the morning: a train an hour later can take longer.
Let the ranking choose by train time
Set “train” as the transport in the ranking and the Saturday or Sunday you have in mind: every area is then scored with its timetable time from your station, alongside the snow measured nearby, the forecast, the day’s price and the crowd estimate, and the areas the timetable does not reach are marked as estimates. The best-by-train guide picks the areas where the station is at the lift; the city pages list the fastest from each station.

How the times were read
For each of the 12 stations and each area, Skiboard asked the public timetable (transport.opendata.ch, which publishes the Swiss timetable of SBB and its partners) for the connections leaving between 06:30 and 09:30 on Sat 16 Jan 2027 to the bottom station of one of the area’s lowest lifts, and kept the fastest, walk included. That read is from 30 Oct 2026 and is repeated when the next timetable is published and after every catalog refresh. A single morning’s fastest connection is the honest number for a ski day; it is not the only train, and not a promise for a weekday.
Questions
- Which ski areas can I reach by train from Zürich in an hour?
- 8 areas by the fastest morning connection of Sat 16 Jan 2027, to the bottom station: Röhrenmoos (28 min, 1 change), Regensberg (46 min, 1 change), Bäretswil (49 min, 1 change), Bennau (56 min, 1 change), Rigi Seebodenalp (58 min, 1 change), Rigi-Scheidegg (59 min, 1 change), Flumserberg (1h 00, 1 change) and Friherrenberg (1h 00, 2 changes). Within an hour and a half there are 44.
- How long is the train from Geneva to a large ski area?
- The fastest area with 20 km of pistes or more is Villars (1h 48, 1 change), to Villars-sur-Ollon, télécabine; from Geneva Airport Villars (1h 58, 1 change). From Lausanne it is Villars (1h 04, 1 change), and 16 areas are within an hour and a half.
- Are there direct trains to Swiss ski areas?
- Few, counting a ride to the bottom station under two and a half hours without changing: Chur (12), St. Gallen (9) and Lucerne (6) have the most, among them Brambrüesch (7 min, no change) and Arosa Lenzerheide (24 min, no change) from Chur. Most ski days by train end with one change onto a bus or a mountain railway in the valley; the table gives each station’s direct areas.
- Do the times include the bus to the lift?
- Yes. Each time runs from the city’s main station to the bottom station of one of the area’s lowest lifts, with every change and the walk from the last stop, as the timetable gives them. The resort page names that stop, so you can type it into the SBB app.
- Why does an area show an estimated train time?
- Because the timetable gave no connection to it from any of the 12 stations in the morning window: 38 areas, mostly small lifts without a stop nearby and areas entered from the French side. Their pages and the ranking show a straight-line estimate, labelled as one, until a read reaches them.
