Ski schools in Switzerland: group or private lesson?
Almost every Swiss ski area has a ski school, most of them under the red jacket of the Swiss Ski School brand. We read 73 schools in 52 areas on 2 Nov 2026: a child’s half-day group lesson costs CHF 65 at the median (CHF 39 to CHF 135), a week of five half-days CHF 260, a private hour CHF 95 and a private day CHF 450. The table lists every school with its times; each resort page carries its own.

How ski schools work in Switzerland
Swiss Snowsports, the ski schools’ association, licenses the Swiss Ski School brand: 164 schools teach under it, in the red jacket with the white cross, and most areas have exactly one. Beside them stand independent schools, most of them in the big international resorts, often teaching in English and often with smaller groups. Both employ instructors trained through Swiss Snowsports’ own levels, up to the federal diploma of snowsports instructor. Of the 73 schools here, 56 are Swiss Ski Schools and 13 independent.
Children in a Swiss Ski School follow the Swiss Snow League: a kids’ village with Snowli, the mascot, for the youngest, then the Blue, Red and Black leagues, each passed as Prince or Princess, King or Queen and Star. A child who learnt in Arosa joins the right group in Saas-Fee by showing the booklet. Independent schools grade with systems of their own. The brand’s licence caps a group at ten (eight on a snowboard, a fifth more for children in the high season), asks for at least three levels per discipline and one licence per ski area, and obliges each school to publish its own prices; it sets none, which is why the same half-day costs CHF 39 in one area and CHF 135 in another.
Group or private lesson?
A group lesson puts learners of one level with one instructor at a fixed time, usually from Sunday or Monday for a week. It is the cheap way to learn, and for children from about four the better one: they copy each other, rest while the others ride, and the league tests give the week a goal. Of the 71 schools with group lessons, 31 state a cap on the group, 8 children at the median; the youngest join at 3.
A private lesson is one instructor for you alone or your small party, at the hour you choose and from your own level. It costs CHF 95 an hour at the median, against CHF 65 for a child’s whole half-day in a group, but the price is per lesson, not per person: most schools quote it for one person, and where a further person costs extra it adds CHF 20 at the median. Two adults sharing two private hours pay CHF 88 each, close to the price of a group half-day, and get the morning they want.
Rule of thumb: a child on a holiday week takes the group; a child under four, a nervous adult beginner or anyone with one bad habit to fix takes private hours; a family that wants to ski together books one private instructor for a morning and splits the bill. For a weekend outside the school holidays it depends on where you go: 37 of the 71 schools with group lessons teach them on Saturdays too, most of them in the day-trip areas of central and eastern Switzerland; 20, most in the Valais and Graubünden resorts people stay a week in, run groups on weekdays only, and there a weekend visitor books a private lesson.
What group lessons cost
A child’s single half-day costs CHF 39 to CHF 135 across the 54 schools that sell one, CHF 65 at the median for two to three hours of lesson, cheapest at École Suisse de Ski Les Diablerets (Villars) and dearest at Summit Ski & Snowboard School (Zermatt). The week of five half-days costs CHF 260 at the median (CHF 140 to CHF 450), 20% less per half-day than five single ones. Adults pay CHF 75.50 per half-day where a single one is sold; several schools sell adults three or five days only.
Not in the price: the lift ticket, the rental and, on a full day, the supervised lunch, CHF 22 a day where a school prices it. 12 of the 73 schools charge more in the Christmas and February holidays; the table and the resort pages show their low-season price. 63 schools had published their 2026/27 prices when we read them, 3 still showed last winter’s and 7 name no winter on their price pages; the table and the resort pages say which.
What private lessons cost
A private hour costs CHF 55 to CHF 129 across the 42 schools that sell a single hour, CHF 95 at the median, cheapest at École Suisse de Ski Anzère and dearest at Outdoor Swiss Ski School Grindelwald (Grindelwald-Wengen). 20 of the 70 schools with private lessons sell nothing shorter than two hours; two hours cost CHF 175 at the median (CHF 130 to CHF 245). A full day of 6 hours costs CHF 450 (CHF 300 to CHF 699), the dearest at Stoked (Zermatt).
The price pays the instructor, not the pupil: most schools quote it for one person, one charges nothing for a further person and the others CHF 5 to CHF 50 each, so a private morning for a family of four costs far less per head than the hourly rate suggests. The table gives each school’s smallest booking; the school’s page says how many people it takes on one lesson.
When lessons run
Of the 66 schools with a printed timetable, 28 start the children’s morning class at 10:00; the earliest begins at 09:00, the latest at 10:30, and a morning lasts two to three hours. 37 print an afternoon class too, most from 13:00 or 13:30 to 15:00 or 16:00. 7 schools say their groups run every day of the week, 36 in weeks from Sunday (7) or Monday (29) to Friday; a Saturday arrival joins a week on its first day.
For a weekend outside the holidays, 37 schools run group lessons on Saturdays, as a weekend course, a series of Saturdays or simply daily classes: among the cheapest, Villars, Elsigenalp, Flumserberg, Wildhaus, Chäserrugg-Alt St. Johann and Pizol. 7 start their weeks on Sunday and teach nothing on Saturday, 20 teach groups on weekdays only, and the rest do not say. Private lessons are booked by the hour at every school, online or at the desk, from about 9:00 to 16:00; the links in the table lead to each school’s pages.
What is not included, and how to book
A lesson pays for the instructor only. The lift ticket is separate, though the kids’ village usually runs on a carpet or a short lift the school includes or the area gives for free; skis, boots and helmet are rented next to the meeting point, best the evening before; insurance is your own. Book group weeks with the school directly and early for the holidays, the Swiss Ski Schools sell them online; a private lesson for a weekend is often still free two days ahead outside the holidays. Skiboard sells no lessons and earns nothing from a booking; the prices here are what the schools printed on the day we read them.
Questions
- From what age can a child join a group lesson?
- Most schools take children from 3, the earliest from 2, into a kids’ village with Snowli, a magic carpet and games before the first turns. Below that age the schools offer private hours, or nothing; a three-year-old rarely lasts a full half-day in a group.
- Is the price of a private lesson per person?
- No. It pays the instructor’s time, quoted for one person at most schools; a further person adds CHF 20 at the median where it adds anything, up to the school’s cap, usually four or five. Two or three people of one level sharing an instructor is the cheapest private lesson there is.
- Can I take a group lesson on a Saturday?
- Outside the school holidays at 37 of the 71 schools, mostly in the day-trip areas: Villars, Elsigenalp, Flumserberg, Wildhaus, Chäserrugg-Alt St. Johann and Pizol among the cheapest. In the resorts people stay a week in, the group courses run from Sunday or Monday to Friday, and a weekend visitor books a private lesson; in the holidays, when the courses run daily, a Saturday can be the first day of a week.
- Do I need a lift ticket for a lesson?
- Yes, as soon as the lesson leaves the kids’ village: the price pays the instructor only. Beginners’ areas with a carpet are often free or cheap, and several areas sell a beginners’ ticket for the lowest lifts; the school’s page says which ticket its groups need.
- Group or private lesson for an adult beginner?
- For one weekend, private: two hours on the first morning and two on the second get an adult down a blue run, and two people sharing pay CHF 88 each per lesson. For a week, an adult beginners’ group at CHF 75.50 per half-day is the cheap way and the company helps, but check that the school runs one outside the holidays: many form adult groups only when enough people book.
