How to avoid the crowds at Swiss ski resorts this winter
No Swiss ski area publishes how many people are on its slopes or how long the queue is, but the one thing that decides it most is public: the school holidays, canton by canton. Between 19 Dec and 10 Jan every canton is off at some point, the sports holidays run from 30 Jan to 12 Mar in waves, and the spring holidays start on 20 Mar. These steps read that calendar against where each area’s visitors come from; the tables give every canton’s dates for 2026/27 and, for the 30 largest areas, the weekends to pick and the ones to skip.
Step by step
Know whose holidays fall on your weekend
Counting each canton by its residents, 100% of Switzerland’s pupils are off on the weekends of 26–27 Dec, 2–3 Jan, and 60% already on 19–20 Dec. After New Year the fullest Saturdays are 13–14 Feb (66%), 10–11 Apr (61%), 6–7 Feb (60%). The canton table below has every date, from the pages the cantons publish them on.
Pick the weekends between the waves
From January to March, fewer than 10% of Switzerland’s pupils are off on the weekends of 16–17 Jan, 23–24 Jan, 13–14 Mar, 20–21 Mar. Those are the Saturdays with the best snow of the year and the shortest queues, and at the areas that price by date they are among the cheaper ones too. The weekends on either side of them carry one region’s holidays, not everyone’s.
Mind which cantons feed your area
An area’s day visitors come from the cantons within a drive, so Zürich’s sports holidays fill the east and the centre while Vaud’s and Geneva’s fill the Valais and the Vaud Alps. The second table reads each large area against the holidays of the cantons its visitors come from, weighted by travel time: at Espace Liberté, 77% of the likely visitors are on holiday on 13–14 Feb. Each area’s quiet weekends are in the same row.
Early in the season, count what is open
In December the few areas that run take everyone who wants to ski, and on 19–20 Dec 60% of the pupils are already off: a glacier that is the only thing open within two hours is the fullest place of the winter relative to its pistes. The open-this-weekend page lists which areas run lifts on the coming Saturday and Sunday by their operators’ plans; the fewer there are, the earlier you should be at the first lift.
Read the forecast the way everyone else does
A sunny Saturday after a week of snow fills the car parks by nine; a grey one with no fresh snow at a big area is the quiet day of the month. Skiboard’s crowd estimate reads the MeteoSwiss forecast and the fresh snow for each weekend day alongside the holidays, and where the shop prices by date, whether the operator itself prices that day as a peak. A high price on the operator’s own calendar is the operator telling you when it expects a crowd.
Be at the first lift, or come by train
On a full day the queue is at the car park and the first lift, not on the mountain. Each resort page names the main car park with its spaces and its day price where the operator publishes them, and the fastest train from your city to the bottom station with the stop and the changes. Zermatt is reached from the Täsch terminal and the Jungfrau areas from Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald: those car parks fill first on a holiday Saturday.
Use the estimate, and know what it is not
The ranking and every resort page say for each weekend day whether an area is likely quiet, moderate, busy or very busy, with the reasons: the holidays of its visitors, the operator’s price for the day, the weather and fresh snow, how much else is open nearby, and its skier days over what its lifts carry. The “Quiet” preset ranks by it. It is never a count of people or a waiting time: no Swiss area publishes those, and Skiboard does not invent them.

How the shares are counted
Each canton’s dates were read on its own pages (or its main town’s, where the canton leaves the weeks to its communes) on 28 Oct 2026, and a holiday week counts the weekend on either side of it, since families leave on the Saturday before and come home on the Sunday after. Switzerland’s share weighs each canton by its residents (BFS). An area’s share weighs the cantons by how many of its likely visitors they send, from travel time and population, the same weights the crowd estimate uses. Where communes choose their own weeks, as in Bern, Aargau and Zürich, the share is the part of the canton each wave covers; Bern’s communes publish no list, so only the city’s week is counted.
Foreign guests are not counted: the areas with many visitors from Germany, France, the Netherlands or Britain, Zermatt and the Portes du Soleil among them, are fuller during those countries’ February holidays than these shares show. And a share says who is free, not who comes: the weather decides that, which is what the rest of the estimate reads.
Questions
- When are the sports holidays 2026/27 in Switzerland?
- From 30 Jan to 12 Mar, canton by canton, each starting its main week on: 30 Jan: Aargau, Lucerne, Schaffhausen, Nidwalden, Glarus, Obwalden; 31 Jan: St. Gallen; 1 Feb: Thurgau, Appenzell Ausserrhoden; 5 Feb: Appenzell Innerrhoden; 6 Feb: Bern, Vaud, Valais, Ticino, Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt, Zug; 8 Feb: Fribourg, Solothurn; 15 Feb: Zurich, Geneva, Jura; 27 Feb: Schwyz, Uri; 1 Mar: Graubünden, Neuchâtel. Where communes choose their own week, the date is the main town’s; the table gives every wave.
- Which weekends are the busiest at Swiss ski resorts?
- By the share of Switzerland’s pupils on holiday: 26–27 Dec, 2–3 Jan (100%), then 13–14 Feb (66%), 10–11 Apr (61%), 6–7 Feb (60%). For one area the answer depends on where its visitors live; the second table gives it for the 30 largest.
- Which weekends are quiet in January and March?
- 16–17 Jan, 23–24 Jan, 13–14 Mar, 20–21 Mar: on each, under 10% of Switzerland’s pupils are off. The weather still fills a sunny one; the estimate on the ranking says which.
- Are Swiss ski resorts busy over Christmas and New Year?
- Yes: all 26 cantons are on holiday on the weekends of 26–27 Dec, 2–3 Jan, and the Christmas holidays span 19 Dec–10 Jan across the cantons. Where the shop prices by date, those are the dearest days of the winter too.
- Does Skiboard know how long the lift queues are?
- No. No Swiss ski area publishes queue times or skier counts by day, so Skiboard estimates how busy each area is likely to be, in four levels with its reasons, and says so wherever the estimate appears. The holidays on this page are the largest part of that estimate and the only part that is a published fact.
